Depending on what angle you look from, it was either a very good week or a pretty bad one for the Army lacrosse programs.
The good news is that the women’s team, led by seven goals from junior Allison Reilly and four goals from sophomore Geneva Milch Cesoni, defeated visiting Lehigh, 19-8, in a Patriot League game on Friday evening. Reilly was named the Patriot League’s “attacker of the week” for her play. The Black Knights improved their record to 6-2 on the season and are 2-1 in league play.
The bad news is that, once again, Boston University defeated the men’s team and knocked them from the ranks of the undefeated in college lacrosse. The Terriers scored a goal nearly two minutes into overtime to beat the Black Knights, 10-9, on Saturday at Michie Stadium. Army, now ranked ninth in the nation, is 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play, tied at the top of the standings with BU, which holds the tiebreaker based on head-to-head results.
Boston University’s win comes despite an outstanding performance by Army junior goalie Sean Byrne, who stopped 18 of 28 shots he faced. Freshman Hill Plunkett, the younger brother of Army star, junior Evan Plunkett, scored two goals for the Black Knights and faceoff specialist Robert Simone, filling in for injured all-American Will Coletti (lower body injury) won an impressive 13 of 21 faceoffs.
“BU is a great team and they just played really hard and they had outstanding goaltending today,” said Army coach Joe Alberici, speaking of BU senior goalie Will Barnes who made 22 saves on 31 shots. “Twenty-two saves are a rarity in our sport. We had great goaltending ourselves. Sean Byrne was outstanding with 18 saves and played as good as anyone on the field today.”
The women’s team hosts No. 4-ranked Stanford (9-2), on Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m., at Michie Stadium. On Saturday, the Black Knights visit Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. for a noon start.
The men also have a tough matchup this week, hosting No. 5 ranked North Carolina (7-1) at Michie Stadium, starting at noon. The following Saturday the men’s team visits Colgate, with a matchup at arch-rival Navy slated for April 5.
