Army lacrosse—both the men’s and women’s teams—are locked and loaded for the start of their respective Patriot League seasons.
On Saturday, the men’s team, now 4-0 and ranked as high as fifth in the nation in one poll, knocked off Mercer, 17-4, in a non-conference game played at a neutral field in Naples, Fla. Freshman sensation Brayden Fountain scored five goals in the game to run his season tally to 16 goals. Senior Jackson Eicher had three goals and four assists and junior Gunnar Fellows scored four times and had two assists for the Black Knights, who had an 8-0 halftime lead.
The women’s team, 3-0 and ranked 23rd in the nation, defeated Siena, 17-3, behind seven goals and one assist by junior Brigid Duffy on Saturday. Fellow juniors Allison Reilly and Chloe Garrett and sophomores Ryan Remaly and Geneva Milch Cesoni each scored twice for the Black Knights.
The men’s coach, Joe Alberici, said his team looks to be in a good spot as it gets ready to start the Patriot League, with a noon game next Saturday versus Lafayette at Michie Stadium. “I think the past eight days have really shown just how good a team we can be this year,” he said. “Just in those days, we beat a very good Big 10 team (Rutgers), a very good Ivy League team (Yale) and travelled to Florida to knock off Mercer. In those three games, we gave up just 10 goals and outscored the competition, 40-10.
“Of course, I feel we could play better in some areas, but the constant pressure we have put on other teams so far will serve us well as we get into league play.”
Army women’s coach Michelle Tumolo is also happy with her team’s performance thus far. The Black Knights have played and won three non-conference games and still have two more (at Colorado and home to Fairfield) before opening up their Patriot League schedule against Boston University on March 8.
“Right now, I am beyond happy with our team,” said Tumolo. “The quality of lacrosse we are playing is the quality we want to be playing and we are getting better game by game. Last year, we lost to Siena, this year we beat them and we did it in such a way to show that we are a better team and a more focused team.”
